We welcome you to enjoy a rare opportunity to view the documentary film The Legends of Madiba: In Their Own Words, showcasing Black female South African jazz singers during the apartheid era (1948 – 1990s). This film is presented in affiliation with the installation by Lido Pimienta: Love and Resistance, on view until May 31.

Presented by London, Ontario-based, Juno Award-winning artist Lorraine Klassen and TD Curator of Collections Zahra McDoom, this film honours Black women’s lineage that sustains creativity, resilience, and community through adversity and injustice. From sequin gowns, segregated audiences, and defying apartheid, these women share their lives with joy and humanity.

About the Film:

The Legends of Madiba: In Their Words is a documentary film celebrating five pioneering Black South African women in music and performance who kept the spirit of Nelson Mandela alive during the years of apartheid. Lorraine Klassen presents South African jazz legend and mother, Thandie Klaasen, along with Dolly Rathebe, Dorothy Masuku, Abigail Kubeka, and Sophie MgCina. This documentary is a powerful tribute to the endearing relationship between creativity, love, and resistance.
