Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story

Join us for a special screening of Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story, presented in conjunction with the exhibition Black Lives Lived Here: London Family Photos, 1910s–1960s. Jackie Shane was a groundbreaking Black trans woman and soul singer whose electrifying performances lit up Toronto’s music scene in the 1960s, with memorable appearances in London throughout her career. Her story is one of creativity, resilience, and trailblazing artistry—shaping Canada’s cultural landscape and inspiring generations of performers.

Before the film, we’re thrilled to welcome Naomi Nadea, queer advocate, community leader, and founder of The Rainbow Community of Canada, alongside TD Curator of Collections Zahra McDoom for a conversation about Shane’s fearless spirit, courage, and enduring influence.

About the Film
A star is reborn. With an outsize stage presence that eclipsed even the greatest R&B artists, trans soul singer Jackie Shane shattered barriers with raw talent, courage and an unbreakable commitment to truth. Through never-before-heard phone conversations, dazzling animation and an incredible soundtrack, the full scope of her extraordinary life and career is finally revealed in this remarkable portrait. From executive producer Elliot Page and the producers of the Emmy Award-winning Hip-Hop Evolution.
